This itinerary offers a perfect mix of challenge, natural beauty, and cultural exploration, culminating in the majestic Machu Picchu. It's ideal for adventurous travelers looking for an off-the-beaten-path trek with fewer crowds than the Inca Trail.

Day 1: Arrival in Cusco

  • Arrive in Cusco: Fly into Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. Take it easy today to acclimate to the altitude (11,150 feet / 3,400 meters).

  • Activities:

    • Explore the vibrant Plaza de Armas and its surrounding streets, filled with colorful shops, cafés, and historic architecture.

    • Visit Koricancha, the Temple of the Sun, and admire its combination of Inca stonework and colonial architecture.

    • Optional light hike to Sacsayhuamán, the massive Inca fortress overlooking the city.

Day 2: Cusco to Soraypampa – Start of the Salkantay Trek

  • Drive to Soraypampa: Early morning drive from Cusco to Soraypampa (12,600 feet / 3,850 meters), the starting point of your trek. The drive takes about 3 hours.

  • Optional Hike to Humantay Lake: After arriving, take an optional acclimatization hike to the stunning turquoise Humantay Lake (13,779 feet / 4,200 meters).

  • Camp at Soraypampa: Settle into your campsite for the night, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Salkantay and Humantay mountains.

  • Distance: 6-7 km (3-4 hours of trekking).

Day 3: Soraypampa to Salkantay Pass to Chaullay

  • Trek over the Salkantay Pass: Start the most challenging day of the trek, climbing to the Salkantay Pass (15,213 feet / 4,638 meters), the highest point of the trek. The ascent is steep but incredibly rewarding with panoramic views of snow-capped mountains.

  • Descent into Cloud Forest: After the pass, descend into the warmer cloud forest, observing the dramatic change in the landscape. Reach Chaullay (9,800 feet / 3,000 meters) by late afternoon.

  • Distance: 22 km (9-10 hours of trekking).

Day 4: Chaullay to Lucmabamba

  • Trek through the Cloud Forest: Continue your descent through lush cloud forest, passing coffee and banana plantations, and following the Santa Teresa River.

  • Coffee Farm Visit: You’ll have the opportunity to visit a local coffee farm and learn about traditional coffee-making methods.

  • Lucmabamba Campsite: Arrive at Lucmabamba, where you’ll camp for the night.

  • Distance: 18 km (7-8 hours of trekking).

Day 5: Lucmabamba to Llactapata Ruins to Aguas Calientes

  • Trek to Llactapata Ruins: Today’s trek leads you to the lesser-known Llactapata Ruins, offering a unique perspective of Machu Picchu from afar. The trail passes through lush jungle and offers magnificent views.

  • Descend to Hydroelectric Station: After exploring the ruins, descend to the Hydroelectric Station, where you’ll take a scenic train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.

  • Aguas Calientes: Enjoy a relaxing evening in the town of Aguas Calientes, preparing for the next day’s visit to Machu Picchu.

  • Distance: 15 km (6-7 hours of trekking).

Day 6: Machu Picchu

  • Visit Machu Picchu: Start early to explore the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. Your guide will lead you through the archaeological site, explaining the history and significance of this iconic Incan city.

  • Optional Hike: For an extra adventure, hike up to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (permits required) for stunning panoramic views of the ruins.

  • Return to Cusco: After your visit, take the train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, followed by a transfer back to Cusco.

Day 7: Departure from Cusco
